Wi-Fi connectivity and the Internet have now joined the base level needs in Maslow’s hierarchy theory. We spend most of our time online and we’re always in search of good connectivity outdoors. New Age Electronics rang in the new year at CES 2016 with a gala customer appreciation event, a series of new-vendor-partnership announcements, and a renewed commitment to filling its product pipeline with emerging technologies as well as with more traditional categories that are profit avenues for the retailers it serves.
LAS VEGAS — In many ways, CES 2016 proved to be a tale of two types of drones. In one part of the show floor, drone makers were introducing new designs like Parrot’s fixed-wing Disco drone and theTyphoon H hexacopter from Yuneec (or, if you want to go even larger and less practical, eHang’s autonomous passenger drone). Meanwhile in other parts of the massive Las Vegas convention center, some drone makers hoped to point out that great things don’t necessarily require big packages.
Mini drones — devices so small they can land in the palm of your hand — were a frequent site at last week’s CES, whether on display in exhibitor booths or buzzing above the show floor. It’s another sign that even as drones get more sophisticated, adding features like 4K cameras and assisted autopilot, there’s still demand for drones that pack a lot of features into a tiny aircraft.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is often about future possibilities, with some of those possibilities being years into the future. Drones, for a large part, can fit into that category. There are some on the market, but many right now are more hype than reality. Still, they are generating a lot of attention, though it could be awhile before drones are commonplace fixtures in the sky. The Federal Aviation Administration is still working out regulations for them, and vendors are dealing with a wide array of issues, from collision avoidance technologies to safety and security.
Well, here’s something you don’t see every day. Among the handful of new consumer UAVs being announced this week by Miami-based Odyssey Toys is the Pocket drone, which earns its named with collapsable rotors that tuck up into the vehicle’s body for maximum portability. Once inside, the drone has roughly the same footprint as an iPhone 6.

There’s no denying that 2015 was a huge year for drones. From the FAA granting over a thousand exemptions to businesses hoping to use drones, to the requirement of registration recently taking effect, drones are here, and likely here to stay. Millions of pilots were born across the world, and the industry only continues to grow.
What does this mean in the commercial sector as well as the consumer sector? We reached out to a few of our expert friends to get their opinions on the booming aerial machines. We asked them their thoughts on where things are headed, as well as their opinion on FAA regulation and how it will affect the world of drones in 2016.
